Tragic Tiger Attack Claims Life of Young Zookeeper in Mexico

In June 2022, a 23-year-old zookeeper named José de Jesús tragically lost his life after being attacked by a Bengal tiger at a private zoo in Peribán, Michoacán, western Mexico.

Moment before Tiger Attack

The incident occurred during feeding time when José reached through the tiger’s enclosure to pet the animal. The tiger suddenly bit his right hand and attempted to pull him toward the cage.

Despite being rushed to a local hospital and later transferred to a facility in Morelia, José refused amputation of his severely injured arm. His condition deteriorated, and he suffered a fatal heart attack, with underlying diabetes potentially contributing to his death.

The tiger’s owner, who also keeps other exotic animals, claimed to have the necessary permits and covered José’s medical expenses. However, authorities found that the tiger was kept in an improperly secured enclosure, leading to discussions about relocating the animal to a zoological park.

This tragic event underscores the dangers associated with private ownership of exotic animals and has sparked conversations about wildlife safety and regulation in Mexico.
